UMN Animation & Film Festival or shortly known as UCIFEST is an annual student-run short film festival that was founded and organized by Universitas Multimedia Nusantara (UMN) Film Study Program since the year 2010. It serves as a creative platform for students and filmmakers to showcase fiction, animation, and documentary works, often featuring international competition categories, workshops, and discussions.
In a world shaped by rapid change, the way we understand power is also evolving. Power is no longer seen solely as authority or formal leadership, but is present in the everyday dynamics that shape the social realities around us. This year, UCIFEST 17 raises the theme “Power”, inviting young filmmakers to explore how power operates within their closest environments whether in relationships, social structures, culture, or personal experiences. Cinema is expected to serve as a medium that reflects, questions, and represents the many faces of power within an ever-changing context.
Through its festival tagline, “some voices are louder, some stories change power,” UCIFEST 17 emphasizes that in social life, not all voices are given equal space or volume. Some individuals are privileged to be heard from the beginning, while others must struggle for their stories to be recognized. Yet reality shows that change does not always come from the loudest voices, but often from the most honest and relevant stories. Cinema holds the potential to redistribute power by providing a platform for marginalized narratives and introducing new perspectives that can reshape how we understand power in a constantly evolving world.
This year's UCIFEST-17 carries the theme "POWER," because every voice matters, and every story has an impact. Through UCIFEST 17, we invite filmmakers to explore how power operates in relationships, social structures, culture, and even the most personal spaces.
Power isn't just about who is the strongest or most dominant. Power is about having the courage to speak up, to question, and to represent reality from a different perspective.
